The Season of Pentecost: Living by the Spirit All Summer Long
As we enter the Church season of Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon the disciples and continues to work through God’s people today. Pentecost reminds us that the Church is not merely a building or an organization—it is the living Body of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Gospel, serve our neighbors, and grow in faith.
The green paraments you see in worship during Pentecost symbolize life, growth, and spiritual maturity. This season is often called the “growing season” of the Church Year because it focuses on how God continues to strengthen and shape us through His Word and Sacraments.
As summer arrives, routines change. Vacations, family gatherings, sports, and outdoor activities often fill our calendars. These blessings are gifts from God and should be enjoyed. However, summer can also become a time when worship and Christian fellowship unintentionally slip to the background.
Just as our bodies need regular nourishment, our souls need the steady gifts that God provides through worship. Every Sunday, God gathers His people to hear His Word, receive His forgiveness, sing His praises, pray together, and be strengthened for daily life. When we neglect worship, we miss the very means by which God encourages, renews, and equips us.
The writer of Hebrews encourages believers:
“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)
This summer, make worship a priority. Whether you are at home or traveling, seek opportunities to gather with God’s people. Stay connected to Christ and His Church. The Holy Spirit is continually at work through God’s Word, and there is no summer vacation from His grace.
We invite you to join us each week at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church as we grow together in faith, receive God’s gifts, and celebrate the life we have in Jesus Christ.
Come worship. Come grow. Come be renewed.
All are welcome — come and see what God is doing among us!
In His service,
Gary Heckathorn, President
