Sermon text: Psalm 90:1–12

Sermon theme: 2017: A New Beginning

Introduction

Grace, mercy, and peace...

One of the fascinating things about life is the beauty of a new beginning... There is just something special about new beginnings...

First day in college, first day on the job, first day of a marriage, the first baby, the first step, a sport match...

So you would agree with me that the beginning of a new thing is always full of great aspirations. (Why? Because we are very good at laying hold of the end goal at the beginning, not considering the cost)

Many people have made resolutions for 2017...

But tonight we are encouraged from a prayer of Moses written in Psalm 90 to take into consideration a few things tonight as we gear up for this new beginning...

What is new beginning to us is not new to our God

Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Time is like an evening gone to our God

Psalm 90:4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

We are like new grass

Psalm 90:5–6 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—they are like the new grass of the morning: In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.

The uncertainty of our days

Psalm 90:10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures, yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

The counting of our days

Psalm 30:12 Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
