Sermon text: Matthew 16:13–20

Sermon theme: Who Is Jesus to You?

Introduction

Today we will spend time pondering this all-important question our Lord asked: “Who does man say I am?”

So we are asking this most important question any of us will ever have to answer: “Who is Jesus to you?”

Response from the world

Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah, and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

From this text we can see that the world is not interested in any mystical idea about Jesus Christ. The world is willing to call him anything other than the son of God/God.

Response from mankind today

  • Jehovah’s Witnesses
  • Mormons
  • Muslims

Response from Heaven

The apostle Peter stood up and made this declaration: “You are the Messiah, Son of the living God.”

Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Johan, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in Heaven.”

Heaven’s response is that Jesus is the Son of God. Heaven made this declaration at baptism and again on the mount of transfiguration.
