Sermon text: Matthew 9:35–38

Sermon theme: Seeing the Harvest through His Eyes

INTRODUCTION

Today is the second Sunday after Pentecost. The greatest danger of the modern church is that we don’t see evangelism as the most important thing.

As Jesus ministered to the needs of people all around him, he met their physical needs, but he was also able to see beyond their needs—he was always moved with compassion for them.

Let’s see what our Lord saw as we see the harvest through his eyes...

HE SAW THE PITY OF THE HARVEST

Jesus saw things that are beyond the natural—beyond the facades of self-sufficiency, self-righteousness, and self-confidence—he saw the loneliness, and the pains of not just their present condition, but also their eternal condition...

HE SAW THE POTENTIAL OF THE HARVEST

The gospel is not weak; it is powerful...

HE SAW THE PROBLEM OF THE HARVEST

Jesus recognized a problem: there were few workers in the field...

This is the cry of our Lord right now as he looks down—why is it that only a few are willing to go?

HE SAW THE POWER OF THE HARVEST

Jesus spoke about the harvest and the need associated with it –why pray, because seeing that the harvest brought into the barn is God’s work, he must till the soil of the heart of the harvester...

Before we start praying for more workers for the harvest, we need to first pray for our own hearts.
